Program Description:

The Lamar Dodd School of Art is one of the largest university art programs in the nation. With over 950 undergraduate art majors and 120 graduate students, the School's faculty and staff are dedicated to providing the highest level of instruction in studio art, design, art education, and art history. In addition to its on-campus facilities, the School also has a year-round Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy that has served over 4,000 students from 400 American institutions since its inception in 1969. More recently the School has expanded the international opportunities for study in art to include programs in Costa Rica and Ghana. With its nationally recognized faculty of art educators whose research areas reflect a broad range of current topics from cognition and the arts to arts-based research and museum education, a significant visiting artist/scholar series, and an excellent art museum and library, the PhD program is well-established and dynamic. The Art Education area is committed to preparing students broadly while developing significant depth in the student's field of choice. To that end, PhD coursework in Art Education is divided between small, advanced graduate courses on general art education concerns such as curriculum theory, assessment, and the history of art education and seminars on highly specialized topics. Taken as a whole, these courses, when coupled with required coursework in research skills, aim to develop specialized graduates highly capable of conducting independent research that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field.
