Degree Offered

MA Theology

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The MA in Theology offers an excellent opportunity to study theology in an in-depth, focused and critical way, either with a view to advanced study or research, for professional development or for employment. It offers modules based on the research interests of staff, allowing you to access the latest developments in biblical studies, systematic, applied and feminist theology, church history, philosophy of religion and ethics, and science and religion. Teaching is concentrated on one day a week to allow maximum flexibility and accessibility. The MA Theology is an imaginative and exciting programme which reflects our research culture.

You are offered serious engagement with the Bible and other key texts, both historical and contemporary, as well as an interdisciplinary approach which opens Theology up to insights from other disciplines such as philosophy, history, anthropology, sociology, archaeology, and literary and cultural criticism. The programme incorporates specific training in research methodologies relating to theology and these other disciplines. The MA can be individually tailored to your needs in order to support you in learning and developing expertise in biblical languages, as well as Latin, patristic Greek and Aramaic, if this is relevant to your research.

A key strength of the course is that modules reflect our academic staff’s current research interests, whilst the programme as a whole presents a balanced survey of contemporary scholarship. We have a very active research culture which is reflected in our publications and in our research centres and projects, which encourage interdisciplinary and collaborative research and regularly bring visiting speakers to the department.

This programme does not just prepare students for doctoral research. Many of our MA students enjoy it because it deepens their understanding of Theology or brings them up to date with current developments in the field. We attract students directly from BA degrees but also have a regular intake of students coming back to education after several years of employment, who see the MA Theology as a way of furthering their career or opening up new career prospects.

Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter are a friendly and supportive department, consistently rated highly for student satisfaction. Time is alway made for our students and we put a premium on making the MA programme work well for each person as an individual.

Features of the MA Theology include:
- graduates in Theology and Religious Studies the opportunity to develop further expertise in a range of interconnected disciplines
- opportunities to engage with the latest scholarship and methodological perspectives through small-group teaching with international scholars who are publishing cutting-edge research
- a supportive and lively environment of scholars and research students who meet regularly for seminars, study groups, and more informal discussions
