MA LAndscape Archaeology
Format: Campus
Program Description:
The MA in Landscape Archaeology focuses on understanding how the historic environment of today came into being, particularly in the Roman, medieval and post medieval periods. Key themes include interdisciplinarity of research methods, the origins and development of regional variation in landscape character, and the inter-relationships between human communities and the natural environment.
The programme includes a wide range of analytical methods including the use of archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, cartographic, documentary and place-name evidence, which can be brought together through the techniques of historic landscape analysis. The modules can be seen in the programme structure section, some of which can be taken online. Students can gain rewarding experience of professional practice as well as mastering the skills of desk-based research, and undertake a substantial piece of original scholarship in the form of the Dissertation.
A distinctive strength of the MA in Landscape Archaeology is the flexibility it provides you to choose your own assignment and the topic you wish to explore in the ‘Professional Skills in Landscape Archaeology’ module. You can choose to specialise in a particular period, or select assignments that focus on particular topics such as fieldwork techniques, the study of standing buildings, or the use of maps and other documentary sources.
Features of this programme include:

- includes field trips, a professional skills module (that can be taken as a placement), alongside taught modules covering key sources, techniques and themes, focusing on current debates
- designed for students who wish to develop their research skills or want to progress to a career in professional archaeology or heritage management
