MA English Studies - Film studies Pathway

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Film Studies Pathway on the MA in English Studies aims to provide students interested in American cinema with a thorough grounding in debates about Hollywood, its history, its industrial structures and its films in the post-war era, as well as in debates about critical and historical methodologies fundamental to Film Studies as a whole.

The pathway also provides students with comprehensive training in researching and writing about film. The Film Studies in English Pathway is supported by rich and significant film research resources in the form of The Bill Douglas Centre for the Study of Cinema and Popular Culture. This is one of Britain's largest public collections of material related to the development of the cinema internationally, with particular strengths in British and American cinemas. The Centre is a vital and unique resource for film scholarship in Britain, and is openly accessible for all Exeter students.

The Film Studies in English pathway is taught by staff with research strengths in most areas of Film Studies from the turn of the nineteenth century to the present day, with particular expertise in early and silent international cinema, US cinema (including Hollywood) and British cinema. Our recent research activities have produced books and articles on topics as diverse as Genre, Gothic Heroines, Stage Illusions and Special Effects, Early Cinema, Tie-Ins and Marketing, the Hollywood Left, Media Constructions of Seattle, and Hollywood Comedy.
