Program Description:
The course provides a thorough grounding in the history of medicine from medieval times to the present day and focuses on the relationship between medicine, science and society. Topics covered include: economics of health care in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries; social history of medicine and surgery since 1800; military medicine; ethical issues; popularisations of science and medicine; history of botany; Malthus; Darwin; Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries European travel literature; popularisations of the mind and brain from the late Nineteenth century; medieval medicine.
