Program Description:
This course is for students wishing to continue academic research in dramatic literature, as well as those wishing to pursue careers as theatre directors. Its focus is on the critical analysis of dramatic texts in the context of performance and performance theory. Many of its classes take place in the fully equipped Studio Theatre, and there are regular visits from theatre writers, directors and other practitioners. This is the longest-established MA of its kind in the country, and provides opportunities for advanced level study of film history (including contemporary cinema) and theory. The course has a very high reputation, with recent external assessments awarding excellent ratings for the quality of both teaching and research. We normally offer at least four specialist film units: students must take at least two of these, although they may elect to take all four. Alternatively, there are several related units that can be selected from courses in Culture and Communication; American Studies; Theatre: Text and Production; Studies in Fiction; and Modernism. This variant of UEA's MA in Film Studies was established in 1990, in response to demand within the expanding national and international film archive world for an appropriate formal course of training. It draws on expertise in the East Anglian Film Archive (EAFA), one of the leading regional film collections housed at UEA.
