Degree Offered

M.A.- Culture and Communication

Format: Campus

Program Description:

This programme examines contemporary debates and issues in the field of culture and communication. It combines theoretical reflection with the practical understanding and study of substantive areas of modern and postmodern culture. The core unit on Critical Theory of the Modern Self examines the crisis of aesthetic and political judgement provoked by modern and postmodern culture. More particularly, it explores the basis of our judgements about justice, distinctions between high and low culture, good and bad art and literature. It is organised around postmodern, deconstructive and feminist readings of such classical theorists of modernity as Rousseau, Kant, Marx and Nietzsche. The other core unit on Linguistics and Cultural Studies develops the means for the linguistic and cultural interpretation and critique of texts drawn from a number of media and genres, including literary works, journalism, advertising, video, the written and spoken word. The strong presence of research in cultural studies and film across the School, and in adjacent Schools, means dissertation supervision can be provided across a wide range of subjects.
