Program Description:

The McAuley School of Nursing (MSON) which is housed in the College of Health Professions (CHP) was established in 1990 with the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit. The CHP and MSON seeks to be recognized as an Urban Center of academic excellence, distinguished by community partnerships and graduates who lead, serve and promote social justice and health. Because of the community of scholars housed within the College, the concentration of resources it brings to each program, the diverse student body it attracts, and its interdisciplinary teaching methods, the CHP is a university model for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Health Services Administration Management graduate certificate prepares current and potential health care professionals in the business aspects of health care. Students who have completed a Bachelors, or Masters degree in business, are eligible to complete this 5 course certificate in order to improve their ability to understand and manage within the U.S. health care system. Course content is specific to the field of health care delivery. Students will learn the use of evidence based health care research in decision-making, health policy, and approaches to quality improvement. Their business training in management, accounting and financial management will be enhanced with an elective such as Health Care Law, Information Systems
for Health Services Administrators or Population Health.

Students who complete the Health Services Administration certificate program are eligible for admission to the MHSA master's program if they meet all admission criteria for the master's program. For entry into the master's program, candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a GPA of 3.00 or better; submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, three letters of recommendation (one from a supervisor) and a personal essay. Applicants who meet the requirements will be interviewed by the Chair of the Health Services Department for final determination of eligibility. All degree requirements must be completed within seven years.

Eligibility Requirements:

(1) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college
(2) A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75
(3) Official transcripts of all colleges and universities attended
(4) One letter of professional recommendation from someone in a supervisory capacity
(5) An autobiographical statement of personal goals and objectives
(6) An interview with graduate faculty

All course work completed outside the U.S. and Canada must be formally evaluated by either the World Education Services or the Educational Credential Evaluators. A course-by-course/detailed evaluation report is required by the University of Detroit Mercy.
