Program Information
Degree Offered
MS, PhD
Program Description:
The Department has major research programs in:
Atmospheric spectroscopy and radiometry, involving worldwide studies of infrared radiation using high-altitude balloons, research aircraft, and ground-based equipment and theoretical studies of molecular studies of molecular spectra
Infrared astronomy, using the department's observatory at the summit of Mt. Evans (4,313 m) and other facilities and data sources
Solid state physics and materials research, investigating and characterizing the mechanical properties of metals and composites with acoustic emission, damping, and resonance apparatus
Solar-terrestrial and magnetospheric physics, examining the effects on the earth's atmosphere of incoming particulate radiation
Atomic and molecular physics, concentrating on excitation, ionization, and charge transfer in atomic and molecular collisions (using fast hydrogen/proton, atomic oxygen, and other atomic/molecular/ion beam facilities and ultrasonic interferometers)
Surface science, using state-of-the-art equipment, and varied research on photovoltaics at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory as well as on-campus facilities
