Program Description:

The MFA program in Studio Art at the University of Connecticut features an intensive, multidisciplinary approach to the development of work in a wide range of art media, including drawing and painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics, photography, video, installation and performance.

The program focuses on the advancement of each student’s abilities as an artist. Work in the studio and studio based classes is combined with courses in art criticism, theory and history to provide a context of ideas for developing students’ visions. Frequent contact with faculty members and visiting artists exposes students to diverse viewpoints and practices.

Tuition is fully waived and generous fellowships are given for teaching and gallery assistantships in this highly selective program. The Program requires two years of full time study for completion of the M.F.A. degree. M.F.A students work closely with faculty members from all areas of the Department of Art and Art History, as well as with visiting artists, and are expected to demonstrate exceptional commitment and productivity. Graduate students must achieve at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for all work carried each semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA for all work completed at the University of Connecticut.

Graduation requirements include the group M.F.A. Exhibition and public talk at the William Benton Museum of Art on the UConn Campus, as well as a final M.F.A. Project thesis paper, on which oral exam questions are based. Following graduation, students present their M.F.A. Exhibition in June at a New York City gallery.
