Program Information

Degree Offered

Ph.D.- Pharmacology

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Primary areas of interest include cancer biology, neuropharmacology, addiction, gene regulation, cellular signaling and trafficking, structural biology, lipid biology and genomics/bioinformatics as they relate to the action of drugs and the development of new therapies to treat disease. Since the faculty members' fields of expertise are broad-based, the programs of study are tailored to meet each student's individual careergoals. Supported by the Department's strong commitment to research, the program is designed to prepare students for independent careers in the full range of pharmacological disciplines. Our philosophy is to emphasize state-of-the-art research approaches at all stages, beginning with the recruitment phase. Weidentify candidates with excellent academic credentials, preferring those who have participated in independent research. During the first year, students must complete three laboratory-based research rotations. Each rotation is intended to examine testable hypotheses, provide exposure to new techniques, and facilitate choice of a thesis lab.

We are located in a state-of-the-art research complex at the new Anschutz Medical Campus, which fosters basic-clinical translational research. The faculty have worked jointly to create new centers of researchexcellence. For example, the NMR center houses an ultra high field (900 MHz) NMR system, one of the few machines of this caliber in the country. In addition, there are large centers for Gene Arrays and their analysis, Bioinformatics and Computational Pharmacology, X-Ray Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry, Computational Biosimulation, as well as newly modernized facilities for Metabolomics, Genomics, Lipid Mapping, and Proteomics, cutting-edge equipment for electrophysiological recording from neurons and brain slices, and a fluorescence microcopy core facility specialized for imaging protein targeting and trafficking in living cells.
