Program Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) offers the opportunity for graduate study in specialized areas of mechanical engineering. It is composed of 15 faculty members and roughly 55 graduate students. We offer both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs with a large variety of research activities.

Research activities within the department span seven broad areas. They include energy processing, bio-applications, nano and microscale engineering, computation and design, materials properties and processing, multiphase flow and combustion, and air quality and fire engineering. Faculty directed research is sponsored by federal agencies (NSF, NIH, DOE, ARO, AFOSR, USDAFS, ONR, etc.), state agencies (Cal Trans, CIEE, UCTC, etc.), and industrial sponsors (Raytheon, Aeptec, Lockheed, Bourns Inc., etc.). Extramural grants received in 2008 to date exceed $1.2 million.

Diversity, personal advising, and active research are the highlights of our graduate program. This is evidenced by the multiple and modern research areas you will find in this Department, the close contact and advising students have with all faculty, and the rapidly growing size and prestige of our individual research programs.

In tune with the rapid economical growth of the Inland Empire area, where UCR resides, the ME department is developing at a fast pace. The ME Department has projected a substantial growth of roughly double its current numbers of faculty and graduate students in the next 5 years. Therefore, this is a time of great opportunity for development and we would like you to be a part of it.
