Program Description:

UC Irvine's PhD Program in Visual Studies is a joint program offered by the Visual Studies faculty, which consists of all regular members of the faculties of the Departments of Art History and of Film & Media Studies.
The course of study offers students the opportunity to pursue graduate work in cultural analysis of visual artifacts and experiences. Visual Studies synthesizes methodological insights from both component disciplines in order to examine the social practices of visual representation and visuality itself.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to graduate study at UCI. A recent sample of academic writing—such as a representative undergraduate paper, or the master's thesis or a major research paper written at the master's level—should be submitted with the application packet. The deadline for application is December 15th of each year for entry into the following fall quarter(Sept). This PhD program accepts applicants for admission for the fall quarter ONLY. Additional information is available from the Director of the Visual Studies program.

International Student Requirements:

Applicants of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should have completed degree programs representing a minimum of 16 years of schooling with at least 12 years at the primary and secondary levels. International applicants whose primary language is not English are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores along with their application. Foreign applicants wishing to be considered for a first-year teaching assistant appointment must also submit results for one of the approved English proficiency exams (TSE, TOEFLiBT, or IELTS).
