Program Information

Degree Offered

M.S. - Biomedical Engineering;, Ph.D. - Biomedical Engineering

Program Description:

Biomedical Engineering Department
Areas of Emphasis:

Biophotonics – development and use of optical technologies to examine and manipulate biological systems on the sub-cellular; cellular, tissue; and organ levels

Biomedical Nanoscale Systems – the development of Micro/Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS); microsensors; and micro/nanofluidics to develop new diagnostics and therapeutic tools for biomedicine

Biomedical Computational Technologies – image processing and pattern analysis; data and knowledge base management; high-speed distributed computing and rendering of large biomedical data sets

Tissue Engineering – the combined use of engineering and life science methods to understand, restore, maintain or improve tissue function; often involves culturing cells in three-dimensional scaffolds that mimic the extracellular matrix

Neuroengineering – understanding communication between human and machine to develop better neural prostheses, e.g., cochlear implants, deep brain stimulator, and brain computer interface

Orthopaedic Biomechanics – developing biomechanical systems to determine and evaluate diarthroidal joint function; injury mechanisms and reconstruction strategies

International Student Requirements:

A minimum score of 600 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)PbT, a 213 on the cBT, or a minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT, is required of all international students whose native language is not English.
