Program Description:
UC Irvine's Department of Epidemiology in the School of Medicine offers a course of study leading to either the M.S. or the PhD in Epidemiology. Our degree program is designed to train future researchers via an approach that integrates basic and clinical epidemiologic research methods and principals. Particular strengths of the program at UC Irvine include genetic, cancer and environmental epidemiology leading to chronic diseases in human populations. Biostatistics is an additional strength of our faculty. The mission of the Department of Epidemiology faculty is to study the etiology (genetic and environmental) and control of chronic disease, particularly cancer, through its surveillance (cancer registries), teaching, education, research and public service activities.
The UCI Center for Cancer Genetics Research and Prevention as well as the Genetic Epidemiology Research Institute operate within the Department of Epidemiology. Fees for California residents are approx. $14,944 per year with fee waivers available via fellowship awards, teaching assistant employment and research assistant employment. Need-based Financial Aid is available to US Citizens.
The application process is via the campuses online graduate school application administered by the UC Irvine Graduate Division. Please note that the Department of Epidemiology faculty are part of the School of Medicine and not from the UC Irvine Program in Public Health which offers the professional Master's in Public Health (MPH) degree.
Accreditation:
UC Irvine is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and all graduate programs receive rigorous external reviews mandated by the University of California every five years. The School of Medicine is accredited by the LCME.
Eligibility Requirements:
At least three (3) letters of recommendation are required; however, a fourth letter will be considered. Two official copies of transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you attended. International Student Requirements:
All applicants whose primary language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English for admission consideration. However, this requirement is waived for applicants who have received an advanced degree from an accredited U.S. college or university. Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by passing one of two standardized, internationally administered tests: TOEFL (the Test of English as a Foreign Language); or IELTS (International English Language Testing System). Submission of TSE (Test of Spoken English) scores is strongly encouraged and available TSE scores are considered.
