Program Description:

The Department offers a program of graduate study leading to the PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures, with concentrations in Chinese, Japanese and East Asian Cultural Studies. The graduate program emphasizes rigorous training in language and textual analysis, with equal attention given to the historical, social, and cultural dimensions of literary study. In addition to more traditional vocabularies of criticism and theory, the curriculum encourages exploration of recent challenges to established conceptual and methodological frameworks. The program builds on the foundation of a faculty whose research interests engage major issues in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture, while developing connections with the larger community of scholarship at UC Irvine

The following graduate emphases are available to all enrolled graduate students: Asian American Studies, Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, Feminist Studies, Translation Studies and Visual Studies.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants MUST provide 1 Official Transcript (from each undergraduate and graduate institution previously attended). If the transcript(s) are not in English, an official English version from the University must be submitted with it. Applicants must also submit a writing sample (not more than 30 pages) for faculty review. This is seperate from the personal statement and statement of purpose you will submit via the online application process. All paper transcripts and writing samples MUST be submitted/mailed directly to the department in hard copy form; do NOT submit these documents electronically via email or other such means. Please address all materials to the East Asian Graduate Coordinator using the address available on the department's website. You must select one of three concentrations as your principal pursuit:Chinese, Japanese, or East Asian Cultural Studies. Students may, in addition, select an emphasis, for which they receive certification. Please visit the dept. website.

International Student Requirements:

Applicants of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should have completed degree programs representing a minimum of 16 years of schooling with at least 12 years at the primary and secondary levels. International applicants are also required to submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores along with their application TOEFL scores are required for an applicant who is not a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident and whose primary language is not English. (The TOEFL requirement is waived only when you have attended an upper learning institution for at least 2 years and have received a degree in the U.S.) (UC Irvine's TOEFL Institution Code: 4859)
