Degree Offered
Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN), MSN with specilaizations in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (A/GNP). MSN graduates are eligible for certification by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
Program Description:
The Program in Nursing Science offers the full-time(2 yrs) and part-time (3 yrs) Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) with specializations preparing graduates as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (A/GNP). Graduates of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) tracks are eligible for certification by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Graduates are prepared for clinical and advanced practice roles as well as for educational, administrative and research positions across the healthcare delivery system and for faculty positions in academic institutions. Nursing Science research is formulated within an expanded view of health that includes health promotion, restoration and rehabilitation. This program will promote outstanding research within the nursing science subspecialties as well as related areas of interest of our research faculty.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program is designed to prepare nurses to deliver primary health care to patients in a variety of settings. NPs take health histories and provide complete physical examinations; diagnose and treat many common acute and chronic problems; interpret laboratory results and X-rays; prescribe and manage medications and other therapies; provide health teaching and supportive counseling with an emphasis on prevention of illness & health maintenance; and refer patients to other health professionals as needed. Nurse practitioners focus on wellness, prevention, & education.
Graduates completing the FNP track are eligible to sit for the FNP certification examinations. Graduates completing the A/GNP track are eligible to sit for both the adult & geriatric NP certification examinations. All graduates are eligible for the national board certification exams.
Accreditation:
The Western Association of Schools & Colleges & the California Board of Registered Nursing(allows MSN graduates to sit for the National Council for Licensure Examination for registered nurses(NCLEX-RN) & obtain a public health nurse certificate.
Eligibility Requirements:
MSN applications must be submitted with ALL supporting documents, during the September 15th to March 1st application window for the following Fall class.
* Applicant must provide proof of Licensure as a registered nurse in California.
* Students are expected to complete the full-time program within two years for full-time status or three years for part-time students.
Accepted applicants must, prior to enrollment, show proof of immunity to Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella. In addition, students must provide a negative tuberculin test within the past year and annually thereafter or Chest X-ray within the past year and every four years thereafter.
International Student Requirements:
In addition to requirements of US students, international applicants, immigrants to the US & US permanent residents whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language, listening, reading, writing, and speaking proficiency. A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 80 & a minimum score of 26 for the speaking portion is required. Completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing, if available in the country of origin. Non-English transcripts must be translated into English by a certified translator. Testing is not required for applicants who have received their baccalaureate degree in the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the UK.
Scholastic record comparable to that of a 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale). Completion of a course in Descriptive & Inferential Statistics. An unrestricted California RN license & proof of direct patient care employment in California for at least 3 years.
