Program Description:

The Department of Drama at UC Irvine and the Department of Theatre at UC San Diego offer a Joint Doctoral Program in Drama and Theatre.
The program's general goal is to prepare students for a successful career at either a research university or a major liberal arts college. An academic career demands a combination of teaching, professional, and research skills. Students must learn how to come up with focused topics, find appropriate materials, read analytically (both primary and secondary texts and documents) and write persuasive, thoroughly researched, and well-organized papers or books. They must also learn how to present material orally in an effective manner, whether at conferences or in the classroom, and to discuss, defend and modify their ideas. Academic positions in theatre may also offer the opportunity to direct undergraduate plays; however, this program, while providing some opportunities for directing, acting, & dramaturgy, focuses on academic rather than practical preparation. Collegiality and professionalism are nurtured through cooperative work within seminars, organized events, and teaching assistantships. Thus, the program aims, through a variety of experiences -- classroom, meetings, independent research, guided research, & teaching -- to prepare students for an academic career in theatre.

Coursework is designed to give students breadth of study in different types & periods of drama, and to allow students maximum freedom to choose courses of particular intellectual interest to them. Our openness of seminar work reflects one of the program's strength; i.e., the principle that by exposing students to the diverse interests and approaches of our faculty rather than imposing a highly structured series of required courses.

Application Deadlline is January 15, 2010 for entrance Fall 2010.

International Student Requirements:

Applicants of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should have completed degree programs representing a minimum of 16 years of schooling with at least 12 years at the primary and secondary levels.
