Program Information

Degree Offered

Ph.D. - Chemistry

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The UCI Department of Chemistry provides a first-class environment for graduate research and education leading to the PhD. We have 44 faculty members, 215 graduate students, 50 postdoctoral fellows, and provide internationally-recognized programs in a friendly, informal setting; our annual research funding exceeds $10 million dollars. All UCI students in good standing are fully supported throughout their Ph. D. studies. Think of it this way: a graduate degree in chemistry is one of the few times in life that you'll be paid to improve yourself!
Research is central to the Ph.D. program, and students choose a mentor and begin their doctoral research during the first year. Strong overlaps exist among the traditional research subdisciplines of chemistry organic, inorganic, biological, physical, and analytical and cutting edge research is occurring at the interface between chemistry and engineering, environmental, and biological sciences. Interactions between Department of Chemistry faculty, collaborations with researchers throughout the UCI campus, as well as strong extramural ties to corporate and government laboratories, provide students with opportunities to interact with scientists from a broad range of backgrounds and interests.
During the first year, students also take classes in their academic area of interest. The department's extensive seminar program, in which UCI scientists and distinguished visitors from other universities present their latest research results, allows students to continue their education throughout their graduate career. Students also gain teaching experience as laboratory instructors and discussion leaders as part of their training. Financial support is provided to all graduate students in the form of teaching assistantships or research fellowships.
