Program Description:
Students are prepared to accomplish biological and technological improvement in agricultural and natural systems to facilitate social innovation. Training in IAD includes both breadth and depth components. Breadth components, required of all M.S. students, aim to establish an understanding of the issues in international development as it relates to agriculture and the environment. These include the history and philosophy of development, leadership and management techniques, fundamentals of crop and livestock farming systems, and agricultural economics. Students acquire depth in their own areas of specialization within the agricultural and social sciences. The areas are agricultural and resource economics, agricultural engineering, agronomy, animal science, anthropology, aquaculture, avian science, community development, ecology, economics, entomology, environmental design, environmental toxicology, food science, gender, geography, horticulture, nutrition, plant pathology, plant biology, plant protection and pest management, political science, pomology, preventive veterinary medicine, range science, sociology, soil science, sustainable agriculture, vegetable crops, viticulture, and water science.
Practical and on-site experience with development issues is encouraged and facilitated by guidance from the group’s approximately 80 faculty members, who possess a wide range of experience in international development.
Graduate students at UC Davis are officially students of the Office of Graduate Studies and work under the supervision of faculty members who are organized in groups and departments. Graduate students must satisfy the requirements of both Graduate Studies and the IAD Graduate Group.
International Student Requirements:
TOEFL minimum scores of 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 68 for the Internet-based test
