Program Description:

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia provides a stimulating environment for graduate research. Our faculty is internationally recognized in microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, and immunology. Vancouver provides a rich scientific environment and many opportunities for interactions with other departments and medical research institutes. We are located in the new Life Sciences Centre (LSC), which houses 80 laboratories focusing on cell and molecular biology, cancer biology and infectious diseases. The LSC has outstanding facilities for microscopy, flow cytometry, high throughput screening, and animal models. Biosafety Level 3 facilities will provide unique opportunities to study disease-causing infectious agents. Our graduate students work in open lab spaces that create a collaborative research environment. Our faculty belong to the Infection, Inflammation and Immunity (I3); Bacterial Adaptation and Response Network (BARN); and Chemical Biology of Disease (CBD) research groups that are housed in the LSC and are affiliated with the Centre for Microbial Diseases and Immunity Research (CMDR). Graduate students in our Department have the opportunity to participate in, and be supported by training programs in Infectious Diseases and Transplantation. Our students have been highly successful in obtaining scholarships and in going on to positions in academia, industry, and health professions.
