Program Description:

The MA Film Studies programme enables you to engage at an advanced level of study with film from a wide range of formal, cultural, social, political and philosophical perspectives. The course is predominately theory-based, although you can choose options from a wide range of practical modules, including digital film and television production and digital arts. A particular emphasis in this programme is placed on alternative forms of cinema and application of the study of film into 'real world' applications (film programming). Students on the course benefit from events and initiatives growing from Bradford's status as the world's first UNESCO City of Film as well as from our partnerships with the National Media Museum, the BBC and Skillset.
The Bradford Media School's experience in digital media production will also enable you to engage with the changing nature of media production and consumption by way of practical options. Guest lecturers and speakers, invited to the university and to associated events (TIMECODE research seminars, film festivals and other media conferences and events), offer you the opportunities to make connections with various media professionals and enterprises. The course is suitable for those wishing to enter the film production, distribution or exhibition industries as well as those pursuing careers in teaching, research or other areas such as journalism with a specialism in film studies.
The National Media Museum (NMeM) provides both a unique learning environment and a large body of resources relating to film and cinematic arts, as well as a growing collection of rare prints, over 9000 books on film and special holdings. You will also enjoy access to unique screenings and to all of the festivals held at the NMeM.

International Student Requirements:

Candidates applying to the course with non-standard qualifications will be judged on an individual basis using the University's APEL procedures. In addition, a test of written and spoken English normally needs to have been passed at grade 6.0 for IELTS or 550 for TOEFL (or 250 for the computer-based test).
