Program Information

Degree Offered

M.S.-Interaction Design and Information Architecture, Certificate - Information Design; ;Certificate - New Media Publishing

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The M.S. in Interaction Design and Information Architecture combines aspects of computer science with liberal arts perspectives, blending theoretical work with practical application. Students focus on designing and developing information technologies to satisfy human needs and desires. They acquire skills to develop new applications for information technology and become proficient in understanding how humans interact with technology. The approach is forward-looking, anticipating the technologies of tomorrow and how they will affect our lives. The faculty, many of whom are managing active research projects, expose students to cutting-edge topics and encourage them to present their own work at national conferences. Students also learn from each other, as they bring experience in computer science, social and natural sciences, history, literature, languages and the arts to the classroom. While they are independent programs of study, the project-oriented certificate programs in Information Design and New Media Publishing complement the M.S. in Interaction Design and Information Architecture program and facilitate the transition to further graduate study through, for example, UB's Doctor of Communications Design program. The graduate Certificate in Information Design program emphasizes system development and usability, while the Certificate in New Media Publishing is for graphic designers, writers, editors, publication managers and other communications professionals who want to do advanced design and creative work in emerging media.
