Program Description:

Instruction is available in the languages, cultures, and civilization of the Middle East. Two degree plans are available: a non-specialist, terminal program, multi-area if desired, and a specialist program requiring a minimum of two years of an appropriate language. Areas of concentration are Islamic/Middle East Studies and Middle East languages and literature at the M.A. level. Doctorates are offered in Islamic Studies and Middle East languages and literature [Arabic, Persian]. Students wishing the doctorate in history must apply to the history department after taking the NES M.A.
