MASTERS: The Department of German Studies offers a comprehensive program of studies leading to the Masters degree in German Studies. Arizona’s ten German Studies faculty members offer advising and interdisciplinary instruction in literary studies from the medieval through the modern period, cultural and film studies, applied linguistics, second language acquisition and teaching methodology, and an introduction to a variety of critical and theoretical traditions in the humanities and interdisciplinary fields of inquiry. Students who complete the MA in German Studies also have the opportunity to acquire a teaching certificate for K-12 public schools in just one additional semester.

DOCTORATE: For applicants who already hold an MA in German Studies or a related field, the University of Arizona and the University of Leipzig offer a joint, dual-degree PhD / D. Phil. Program in Transcultural German Studies / Deutsch als Fremdsprache. This course of study combines emphases on German cultural studies, applied linguistics, literature and film, and second language acquisition and teaching. Admitted applicants may choose to pursue either the dual or joint doctoral degree, and can complete the PhD or the dual PhD / D.Phil in the same timeline as standard German Studies doctoral degrees. Doctoral students spend their first year of coursework either on the Tucson campus or at the Herder Institute in historic Leipzig, and their second year either at the Herder Institut or in Tucson, working with mentors, teachers, scholars, and students from Germany, the US, and other parts of the world.
