Program Description:

Department of Immunobiology has a three-pronged mission within the College of Medicine and the University of Arizona: (i) To conduct cutting edge research in the areas of development, function and regulation of the immune system in health and disease; biology of pathogenic and saprophytic microorganisms; and interaction of these microorganisms with the immune system over the lifespan of the individual. (ii) Together with other Departments, Centers and Programs/Themes at the College of Medicine and other Colleges of the University of Arizona, to engage in interdisciplinary efforts to discover, translate, apply and disseminate through outreach the research-based knowledge to improve health of people of Arizona, the United States and the world. Goals include, but are not limited to, reduction and prevention of sickness and death from infectious diseases, cancer and autoimmune diseases. (iii) To educate medical and other health science students, graduate students and undergraduate students in the basic and advanced immunobiology, microbiology, virology and microbial pathogenesis. The Department is the heart of the Graduate Program in Immunobiology, which offers graduate training leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree with a major in Immunobiology.
