A 1995 report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine concluded, "A world of work that has become more interdisciplinary, collaborative, and global requires that we produce young people who are adaptable and flexible, as well as technically proficient." This new professional master's initiative has been expressly designed to meet this need by: 1) providing appropriate curriculum for students seeking careers in the private sector, science technology, and business, and 2) producing students prepared to enter the 21st century private-sector market that seeks flexible prospective employees with depth in a scientific discipline as well as interdisciplinary training in business, communication, technology transfer, finance, intellectual property, and high technology computing.
