Program Description:

M.A. in Secondary Education (Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning) - The master of arts degree in secondary education offers advanced teacher preparation which builds upon and extends prior knowledge. In addition to continuing the development of instructional expertise, the master's program places greater emphasis on fostering experienced teachers' full capacities for reflective decision making as they base their judgments on knowledge of the subjects they teach, general principles of education and development, and their own experiences in instructional settings. The program focuses on the application of knowledge about teaching to instructional practices. M.A. in Secondary Education (Second Language Teaching and Acquisition) - This program prepares researchers, teachers, curriculum specialists, and administrators at all levels of instruction who are concerned with aspects of second language acquisition, learning, and teaching. Successful completion of this degree will allow students to apply for Class A certification in Foreign Language Education from the Alabama State Department of Education. Ed.S. in Secondary Education (Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning) - The teacher graduating from the Ed.S. program will be capable of participating in the educational decision-making process and will possess the knowledge and skills to facilitate positive change at the classroom, school, and district levels. An emphasis is placed on the analysis and adaptation of instructional strategies applied to diverse instructional contexts. Students who complete this program are eligible for Class AA certification in the state of Alabama.

Eligibility Requirements:

Must hold a bachelor's level teaching certificate in secondary education to be eligible for the MA program. Must hold a master's level teaching certificate in secondary education to be eligible for the EdS program, three letters of recommendation.
