Program Information

Degree Offered

M.S., Ph.D.

Program Description:

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, established in 1967, is one of the oldest Ph.D.-granting computer-science departments in the United States. Although the department grants both the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, the emphasis of the program is on the doctoral degree. The department contains strong, active research groups in Analysis of Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, Complexity Theory, Computer Vision, Parallel Computation, and Pattern Recognition. The department houses the Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition, and faculty and graduate students are actively involved in interdisciplinary research with the Calspan-UB Research Center, the Center for Cognitive Science, the Graduate Group in High Performance Computing, the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, and the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis. In addition, there is a special Ph.D. track in cognitive science. Applicants should contact the director of graduate studies for further information.
