Program Description:

The MSc in Landscape Ecology is one of the four MSc tracks in Earth Sciences offered by the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Landscapes are dynamic and evolutionary (eco)systems, resulting from interrelated processes ad the interface of geo-, pedo-, atmo-, hydro-, and biosphere. Landscape Ecology aims to integrate studies on functions of landscape elements, interactions between abiotic and biotic components, the consequences for landscape evolution and the response of landscapes to environmental change. Research methods vary along scales from microbial responses (e.g. to link soil properties to vegetation development), through optical stimulated luminescence (e.g. to date historic landscape development) to satellite imagery and Geographical Information Systems. All four MSc tracks in Earth Sciences have their own dedicated course programme, using modern techniques combined with fieldwork. However, all four tracks start with the combined course Natural Resource Management of Geo-Ecosystems, including a field trip to Tenerife. In addition, it is possible to follow a combination of courses from the various tracks if desired.
