Program Information

Degree Offered

Master of Science in Human Development & Family Studies (emphasis in Gerontology)

Format: Online

Program Description:

The College of Human Sciences is a member of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA), a consortium of primarily land grant universities that have come together to offer post-baccalaureate programs, through distance education, to students whose families or careers have prevented them from completing an on-campus degree. GPIDEA allows students to pursue a degree or certificate offered by a single institution or multiple institutions - although students are admitted at one institution, they may enroll in courses at multiple institutions at a standard tuition. Gerontology is one of the inter-institutional graduate programs offered through GPIDEA. The 36-hour, Internet-based master's program is designed to prepare professionals who are either working directly with older people or are involved in education and research related to the elderly. Professionals offering direct services often are involved in health promotion programs, directing intergenerational activities, managing senior centers or retirement communities, counseling older people and their families, and helping people plan for retirement. Professionals involved in education and research may evaluate community-based services, teach others about the aging process, develop policies and programs to serve the needs of the elderly, work with business and industry on issues related to an aging work force, and educate consumers.
