Program Description:
Master of Arts-There are two programs for the master's degree. One requires twenty-four semester hours of satisfactory course work (including a seminar and a six hour minor), a reading knowledge of one foreign language, a thesis, and a comprehensive examination. The Department also offers a non-thesis master's program for students who wish not to pursue formal research. This program requires thirty-six hours of course work (including two seminars and a six-hour minor, and a comprehensive examination). It is not a prelude to doctoral work.Doctor of Philosophy-The requirements for the degree are a minimum of sixty hours of course work (exclusive of thesis hours) beyond the bachelor's degree. Student's also must demonstrate a reading knowledge of two languages, or of one language and computer/statistics research tools. Candidates must pass a preliminary oral examination and a comprehensive written and oral examination and must successfully defend a doctoral dissertation in either American, Latin American, or European history.
