Format: Campus
Program Description:
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics prepares students for research or practice in academia and numerous public and private health arenas. Students will acquire the expertise necessary to design and implement basic and applied research in disease etiology, control and prevention.
Epidemiological and biostatistical concepts, theories, and methods are fundamental building blocks upon which the public health sciences are built. Students following the epidemiology and biostatistics track will become competent users of critical health related information, as well as proficient in the use of epidemiologic research methods applicable to various health and public health related settings.
The goal of epidemiology is to identify the patterns and determinants of health and disease in human populations which may be used to determine appropriate health promotion and preventive responses. Thus, students in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics may collaborate with colleagues in other departments to apply their epidemiologic and biostatistics skills to various interdisciplinary areas. Practical placements are available in a myriad of settings to allow students the opportunity to apply their skills.
Students will leave the program with a broad exposure to public health issues. They also will have developed the skills necessary to play an active role in improving the health of the population, particularly in rural settings.
