Degree Offered
M.A.-Art History;, Ph.D.-Art History
Program Description:
Tyler Art History graduate students have many doors open to them. They study in Philadelphia and abroad, pursue research in Temple’s three-million-volume library system, and take advantage of the many universities and libraries in the area. They explore research opportunities in Washington, DC to the south and New York City to the north, and have at their disposal some of the world’s greatest museums. Students gain valuable experience teaching at Temple and other institutions in the region. They acquire hands-on contact with ancient civilizations as part of Temple summer excavations in Crete and Italy and can study in the Temple Rome “Art and Culture” program. Our graduate students conduct research internationally through competitive fellowships and departmental awards. They work as interns at the Philadelphia Museum and related institutions, including Tyler’s own gallery. They present papers at conferences and curate exhibitions worldwide, organize talks and symposia on campus, and work with faculty in cross-disciplinary reading groups.
“Graduate Art History at Tyler is a dynamic opportunity,” says Department Chair Dr. Gerald Silk. “It’s a high quality program, in which students from the United States and abroad study with world-class scholars.” Coursework areas include the Mediterranean and Europe, especially Bronze Age Aegean, Ancient Roman, Medieval, Byzantine and Coptic, Northern and Southern Renaissance and Baroque, and Modern Italy and France, as well as Modern and Contemporary American. Located in an exciting new arts building and part of a leading art school within a diverse research university, the department exposes students to a wide variety of critical methods and approaches.
Through instruction, teaching and internships, Tyler Art History graduate students are well prepared for the working world. Recent graduates are employed by Christie’s Auction House, the Institute for Aegean Prehistory, the Philadelphia Museum, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and as faculty at colleges and universities around the globe. The Graduate Art History Organization sponsors activities such as career workshops and guest lectures, often in partnership with other Temple groups. “Our graduate students are an engaged and vibrant cohort,” comments Silk. “They thrive in this robust atmosphere, supported by deeply dedicated faculty.”
