Program Description:

The Program in Arts Administration strives to integrate four issues to help professionals meet the challenges of the coming decades: an increased understanding of the arts, the role of the arts in education, the business of the arts, and arts law. Questions about the long term health of arts organizations, their missions, governance, management, sources of income, and tax regulations are all important issues as we move into the next century.

The Program in Arts Administration recognizes the role it has in fostering international models of arts management. How we address strategic management issues is increasingly important as arts organizations become multi-national presenters.

The Program in Arts Administration offers broad opportunities professionally and intellectually as it seeks to train arts management leaders, raise professional standards, build cooperative management models, provide state-of-the-art management tools, strengthen advocacy for artists and arts organizations, and focus on the strategic issues arts managers face.

The Program's relationships with outside organizations are important ones for students to build on. Through the professional Internship Office, alumni relations, faculty contacts and student connections, these relationships are nurtured.

The objectives of the program are to:

Train new leaders to manage and administer arts and cultural venues.
Raise the standards of arts administration to a new level of social responsibility.
Broaden the horizons of arts educators, facilitating their interactions with the arts community.
Give arts educators new management and administrative tools.
Strengthen advocacy roles for artists.
Provide the theoretical and practical preparation for students whose professional objective is a career in arts administration, arts education, or a combination of the two.

Accreditation:

Full members of the Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE).

Eligibility Requirements:

3 references (preferably 2 from those who know the applicant professionally and 1 academic), 750-page essay.

International Student Requirements:

Same as for all students, plus the TOEFL exam (600 minimum).
