Program Description:

The Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed to prepare expert advanced practice primary care clinicians capable of providing care to families in primary care settings. The program builds on the undergraduate foundation and develops evidence-based clinical management skills. Family nurse practitioners provide primary and preventive care in such areas as pediatrics, family health, women’s health, and gerontological care. They are advocates and health educators for patients, families, and communities. The program emphasizes clinical competence through theoretical understanding and practical application to primary care practice. Clinicalexpertise is acquired through clinical placements in a variety of public, private, and community-based primary care agencies. The FNP student will complete 802 hours of clinical practice in this 45 credit-hour program of study. In addition, the program provides a strong foundation for doctoral study and research. The MS program accommodates both full-time and part-time students. Full-time students can complete the program in two years; part-time completion typically takes four years.

With a growing need for qualified nurse practitioners, professional-level nursing takes place in private practices, health maintenance organizations, public health agencies, primary care clinics, home health care, hospitals and nursing homes. Career opportunities are also available in offices, palliative care and occupational settings.

The Department of Nursing & Health Systems offers the following graduate degree programs: Nursing Education, Nursing Administration, Adult Nurse practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner and Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. Both MS and post master's Certificates for Advanced Studies are available for all nursing programs.

The mission of the nursing and health professions department is to provide nursing education at the baccalaureate and master's level that focuses on collaboration, active participation in one's own learning, critical reflection, and creative practice to meet the needs of clients across the lifespan. Nursing education is built upon a general education of the arts and sciences that complements professional education in: nursing knowledge and theory; inquiry and research; leadership and community; nursing standards and professional practice.

Established by the SUNY Board of Trustees on June 14, 1966, the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome (SUNYIT) is New York’s public institute of technology. SUNYIT students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in technology and professional studies on the SUNYIT campus - a high-tech learning environment on hundreds of acres minutes from NYS Thruway Exit 31, Utica. Our students come from all over New York, many other states, and more than 20 other nations; a growing number of students also take SUNYIT courses and, in some cases, entire degree programs online.

As part of a substantial expansion in campus infrastructure, a $13 million student center, a $20 million field house and a $23.5 million residence hall were completed in 2011. The next major construction project planned is a technology complex comprising the $27.5 million Center for Advanced Technology and Computer Chip Commercialization Center.

Accreditation:

The MS Nursing programs are registered by the New York State Department of Education and are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). SUNYIT is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Eligibility Requirements:

All applicants to the MS Nursing program must possess a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program with a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the last 30 hours of undergraduate or graduate level coursework. Applicants must currently be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State and must have completed a minimum of one year’s work experience as a professional nurse. All applicants must demonstrate successful completion of a course in descriptive statistics. Nurse practitioner applicants must also have successfully completed an undergraduate health assessment course within five years of registering for NUR 566. For those whose undergraduate health assessment course was more than five years ago, NUR 514 (2 credits) is available.

All applicants to the MS Nursing program must possess a bachelor’s degree with a major in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program with a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the last 30 hours of undergraduate or graduate level coursework (as determined by an official foreign educational credential evaluation service). Applicants must currently be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State and must have completed a minimum of one year’s work experience as a professional nurse. All applicants must demonstrate successful completion of a course in descriptive statistics. Nurse practitioner applicants must also have successfully completed an undergraduate health assessment course within five years of registering for NUR 566. International applicants must present a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the internet based exam.
