Program Information
Degree Offered
Ph.D.- Biomedical Sciences
Format: Campus
Program Description:
The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology offers a graduate program leading to the Ph.D. degree that prepares graduates for careers in academics, industry, and government. Most faculty fall within one or two of four major research areas: cellular and molecular biology, developmental biology and oncology, endocrinology and metabolism, and neuroscience. Therefore, students in the department receive training in a wide variety of biological disciplines ranging from behavior to subcellular structure and function to molecular biology. All students in the College of Graduate Studies take a common core curriculum during their first year of study, including course work in biochemistry and molecular biology, cell and developmental biology, cell physiology, and immunology. This curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad-based education in the biomedical sciences to better prepare them for the current job market. Subsequently, students can take courses in gross anatomy, microanatomy, or neuroscience, as well as gain teaching experience in these areas. Additional courses may be taken at Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Qualifying exams test the capacity to perform original research.
