Program Description:

The major purpose of the SUNY Plattsburgh graduate program in Special Education is to prepare master teachers capable of meeting the educational needs of students with mild and moderate disabilities in one of four certification areas: Birth to Grade 2, Birth to Grade 6, Grades 1 to 6, or Grades 7 to 12.

Any one of the programs will enable teachers to develop the skills necessary to work in self-contained, resource, and inclusive classrooms in both public and private school settings. The Birth to Grade 2 program will also provide the master teacher the information and experience needed to work with infants and toddlers within the home, preschool, and or kindergarten environments.

The prerequisites, courses, credits, and practica experiences required vary depending on the student’s prior education. A candidate must hold initial teaching certification.

Accreditation:

SUNY Plattsburgh is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. Education undergraduate and graduate programs in childhood education, adolescence education, literacy education, and special education are accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Appropriate preparation at the baccalaureate level and teacher certification.
2. Evidence of a strong academic record in undergraduate studies as reflected in a grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4-point scale.
3. Evidence of superior achievement in courses most closely allied with the student’s teaching and/or certification area.
4. Three letters of recommendation indicating the ability to pursue graduate studies; at least two letters should come from college faculty.
5. Four-page application.
6. Statement of Purpose/Intent.
7. Resume.
8. $75 application fee.
9. Availability of openings in the program.

International Student Requirements:

1. Students whose native language is not English must submit official documentation of their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. Required score: 550 or above (paper-based) or 79-80 or above (internet-based). 2. International students must provide official documents to prove that they have enough money to pay for their education, estimated at $26,000 per year.
