SUNY Plattsburgh’s Master of Science in Natural Science is designed to provide degree candidates with the knowledge, skills, experience and credentials to pursue successful careers in three concentration areas: Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science.

Students choose a major concentration in one focus area. Current faculty research includes botany, biochemistry, chemistry, ecology, environmental science, genetics and other areas. The program is supported by course work in three departments (ENV, BIO, CHE prefix courses) and administered by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Students have a three member faculty committee to guide their program with a primary faculty advisor from that committee.

The degree requires 30 credits in science coursework including a thesis or non-thesis option. Required courses include:
SCI 505 Graduate Seminar
SCI 510 Research Methods

Eligibility Requirements:

The admission requirements for this program include:
A baccalaureate degree in a science discipline from an accredited higher education institution, as evidenced by an official transcript.
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale.
An assigned faculty advisor from a participating department. Students should contact the program coordinator or a faculty member to find an advisor.
A combined score above 1200 on the general portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Three letters of reference, indicating the candidate’s ability and suitability to pursue graduate studies.
Four page application form.
$75 application fee.

1. Students whose native language is not English must submit official documentation of their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. Required score: 550 or above (paper-based) or 79-80 or above (internet-based). 2. International students must provide official documents to prove that they have enough money to pay for their education, estimated at $26,000 per year.
