Program Description:

SUNY Plattsburgh’s M.S. Education Program in Literacy Education is designed to prepare literacy practitioners in 3 categories:

• The literacy professional in the classroom (early childhood teacher, elementary school teacher, middle and secondary school teacher, special education teacher, and adult education teacher).

• The specialized reading professional (school or district reading specialist, reading coordinator).

• The allied professional (related service professional).

Successful completion of the program prepares the candidate to apply for New York State certification in Literacy, Birth to Grade 6 or Literacy, Grades 5 to 12.

Accreditation:

SUNY Plattsburgh is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. Education undergraduate and graduate programs in childhood education, adolescence education, literacy education, and special education are accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)

Eligibility Requirements:

1. appropriate preparation at the baccalaureate;
2. a completed application form with required supporting materials;
3. evidence of a 2.75 undergraduate GPA on a 4.0 scale;
4. three letters of recommendation (at least two must be from a professor or academic advisor if you are currently taking graduate courses or if you have taken undergraduate or graduate courses within the last three years) that address your ability to take part in a graduate program in education;
5. a statement of purpose indicating why you want to enter this specific program;
6. a resume indicating relevant teaching experience;
7. a copy of your teaching certificate at the elementary and/or secondary level;
8. a completed Literacy Questionnaire for Applicants; and
9. attendance at an on-campus interview, if invited.

International Student Requirements:

1. Students whose native language is not English must submit official documentation of their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. Required score: 550 or above (paper-based) or 79-80 or above (internet-based). 2. International students must provide official documents to prove that they have enough money to pay for their education, estimated at $26,000 per year.
