Program Information

Degree Offered

M.P.A. (Masters in Public Administration)

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The graduate program in public administration develops competencies in management and leadership in governmental, nonprofit and other public service organizations. It leads to a Master of Public Administration (MPA). Three emphases are currently offered: general, health care management and public safety.

Application to the MPA program requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and evidence of the potential to succeed at graduate study. Any undergraduate major course of study provides acceptable preparation for the study of public administration.

To receive the MPA, students complete 42-45 credits of graduate course work, an internship (if applicable), and an applied research paper (portfolio or project paper).
Prospective students with a minimum of two years of experience in administrative, managerial or professional work (in a position that requires a baccalaureate degree) in an organizational context may elect to submit a résumé as part of the application process. During the application review process, the department determines whether such applicants qualify as “inservice students.” This designation would reduce the number of required credits for the degree and may eliminate the requirement for an internship.

Courses are three credits and typically meet once per week for a semester. Most courses are offered in the evening in downtown Rochester at the College’s MetroCenter. Some courses are offered online through the Internet. Average class size is under 20 students.

The program also offers two graduate certificate programs: a Certificate in Nonprofit Management, and a Certificate in Arts Administration (in conjunction with the MFA degree offered by the Visual Studies Workshop). As an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), the program is committed to quality in public affairs education and ascribes to the NASPAA Member Code of Good Practice.

The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).
