Program Description:

This program is designed to prepare students for master's-level positions in human services and the mental health fields. An additional aim of the program is to prepare students for doctoral-level study in clinical fields, by providing them with an essential academic and experiential background. The program does not purport to train students as clinical psychologists, which in New York requires a PhD for state licensure. Clinical work performed by our graduates should be conducted under the direction and supervision of a licensed clinician.

The program is based on the scientist-practitioner model, yet recognizes that human service professionals require more than simply academic knowledge. Among the other qualities deemed necessary to be an effective clinician are: strong interpersonal skills; sound judgment and rational decision making; personal maturity and stability; sensitivity to the feelings and outlook of others; an ability to maintain professional distance and an objective perspective on problems; a level of integrity that is beyond reproach; and a willingness to maintain a high level of ethics and professionalism at all times.

The Council of Applied Master's Programs in Psychology (CAMPP) is the nationally recognized governing body representing master's-level programs in psychology. The College at Brockport's program meets CAMPP standards of training, formulated at the 1990 National Conference on Applied Master's Training in Psychology.

A minimum of 42 graduate credits is required, including 30 credits of course work and 12 credits of supervised practicum. Students must enroll for a minimum of six credits per semester. The program requires a minimum of four semesters to complete. Students combine their developing clinical skills with their unique personal strengths through a carefully selected, individualized 600-clock-hour practicum at one of more than 40 agencies in Western New York.

International Student Requirements:

1. Official or true certified copies of post-secondary academic records (transcripts, examination scores, mark sheets, etc.) in both English and original language. 2. Official or true certified copies of diploma, degree, or certification, in both English and original language. 3. TOEFL exam results. Required minimum scores are: 550 on paper-based version, 213 on computerized version or 79-80 on iBT. 4. A statement of objectives in English that gives reasons for selecting the field of study (see application for details). 5. An original bank statement (issued in the last six months) in your name or that of your sponsor showing a current balance of at least US $23,870. 6. An original letter written, signed and dated by your sponsor, stating the amount of US dollars allocated for your education each year while attending The College at Brockport. This is not required if the financial/bank statement is in applicant's name. 7. Letters of recommendation (see application).
