Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A. in Mathematics

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The goal of the graduate program in mathematics is for its students to achieve a thorough appreciation and mastery of theory and structure, a strong ability to construct rigorous proofs, and a deep understanding of the foundations that support the major applications of mathematics.

The graduate Plan of Study includes 30 credits of course work: three core courses (algebra, analysis and applied mathematics or statistics), four additional approved graduate mathematics courses, and three approved electives selected from graduate courses in mathematics, computer science, economics, education, or other mathematics-related fields. After completing 24 or more credits of the courses included in the Plan of Study, students must pass a comprehensive examination based on the three core courses.

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Assistantships take extra time and energy above and beyond required course work, but are a great way to offset tuition fees and advance your professional experience.

The Master of Arts in Mathematics prepares students for a wide variety of career choices. Graduate who have had the desire to further their education have gone on to pursue doctoral degrees. Graduates also have gone on to teach at all levels, from elementary school to college. Others work in a broad range of businesses and positions that include research, engineering, sales, marketing and executive positions.
