Degree Offered

M.A. - Spanish

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Department of Languages and Literatures at St. John’s University offers a Master of Arts degree in the language, literature and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The program prepares students to teach at all levels, conduct research and excel in careers that require an in-depth knowledge of Hispanic language and cultures.

Taught in Spanish, the courses provide students with a solid understanding of the historic and contemporary issues shaping Hispanic civilization. The program highlights five areas of concentration: Linguistics, Peninsular Literature before 1700; Peninsular Literature of the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries; Spanish-American Literature from Pre-Columbia through the 19th Century; and Spanish-American Literature from Modernism to the Present. In addition, the University sponsors an ongoing series of lectures by prominent literary figures from both Spain and Latin America and the publication of the literary journal Anuario Medieval.

Students can choose between a thesis or non-thesis option. The 33-credit thesis option includes 27 credits in five areas of concentration and six credits in Master’s Research (SPA 900). Students also must demonstrate a reading knowledge of English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or another language pertinent to their thesis. The 33-credit non-thesis option requires coursework in all five areas of concentration—a minimum of three credits from each division—and 18 credits in course electives.
