Program Description:

The M.A. in Global Development and Social Justice is a two year Distance Learning and on-site program comprised of 33 credits, that offers 12 full RIID (Rielo Institute for Integral Development) scholarships to students in developing countries who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. This program seeks to promote intercultural dialogue among students and faculty, and to critically analyze and understand key concepts in global development.

It combines concerns for world development with awareness of the human person, the common good, solidarity and subsidiarity through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching. Issues such as migration, education, the environment, health along gender lines, and the political economy of food and hunger are examined. The role of non-governmental organizations, inter-governmental organizations and national governments, particularly in matters affecting human rights and sustainable development, are also covered. Upon completion of the program students will present a Capstone Project on a specific development issue where they will explore and identify adaptable and effective solutions.

When students begin the program they are given a free lap top and a digital camera which they will keep after graduation. Four courses in total are taught in a classroom setting at the RIID headquarters in Rome. Three of them, Introductory Seminar, International Organizations and Development and, Information Resources for Development Professionals are offered at the beginning of the program, while the fourth and final course, Integrating Seminar, is held just before graduation in Rome.
