Program Description:

Fully accredited by the American Library Association, these two programs prepare students to launch or strengthen careers in information centers such as public, private and academic libraries, corporations, health centers, government agencies, museums and school media centers. Graduates of these programs also land rewarding positions as archivists, bibliographic editors, database managers, drug information specialists, indexers and abstractors, online searchers and systems analysts.

The 36-credit MLS program comprises 12 courses—encompassing general core requirements in library science and information management as well as advanced electives in a wide variety of topics such as digital libraries, law libraries, library administration, literacy programs, multimedia resources, Web design and special collections. Students also may gain experiential learning through for- and non-credit internships throughout the New York City metropolitan area. New York State will issue the Professional Certificate for Public Libraries to St. John’s graduates who provide proof that they have completed their MLS degree.

The 24-credit Advanced Certificate program allows practicing librarians and information specialists to expand their knowledge and skills. Advanced coursework includes areas such as digital libraries, information ethics, language structure, legal information, preservation technology and metadata for information professionals. Nine credits may be taken from outside the Division of Library and Information Science but within the University.
