Program Description:
Offered through the Institute of Asian Studies at St. John’s, the Master of Arts degree program in East Asian Studies provides students with a comprehensive and critical understanding of the cultural, economical, historical, and political development of the Asian world. With an intensive emphasis on research, the program also provides students with opportunities to develop language skills in Chinese or Japanese.
The program has two options: a thesis option, consisting of 33 credits, six of which include master’s research and a written thesis in the East Asian field; or a non-thesis option, comprising 33 credits including one of the following courses—ASC 102 (“Great Books from China”) or ASC 300 (“Introduction to Source Materials on China”). Students also complete 12 credits in Chinese language courses (for non-native speakers) and a comprehensive exam. Students also take at least one semester of Chinese, Japanese or another language pertinent to their field.
