Program Description:
St. John's College is the premier great books college in the United States. In the Eastern Classics program, students study the classical texts from India, China and Japan and complete a language tutorial in either Sanskrit or Classical Chinese. The aim of the Eastern Classics program is to seek a deeper understanding of the fundamental and enduring questions that have been raised by thoughtful human beings in the rich traditions of the East. In accordance with the St. John's College approach to education, all classes are conducted by discussion. The seminar covers a wide range of Indian, Chinese and Japanese texts, while the preceptorial and language tutorials consist of more concentrated study. The course of study consists of 34 credit hours, completed in one calendar year, beginning in the fall and concluding in the summer. It is offered only on the Santa Fe campus.
