Dual Degree M.A.-History and M.S.-Library and Information Science

Program Description:

The Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) and the History department offer a dual degree program in History and Archives Management leading to both a Master of Science (M.S.) in Library and Information Science and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in History. The program prepares students for the increasing number of archival positions that require both
technical training and historical knowledge. By focusing on the needs of the rapidly developing Archives profession, the program trains students to work with archival and manuscript material in a variety of settings by combining course curriculum, theoretical background, and hands-on experience.

The Dual Degree program in History and Archives Management consists of a
total of 57 credit hours. Students take 12 credit hours of required library and
information science courses, 12 credits hours of required core archives courses,
and eight additional credit hours in the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science. In the History department, students complete eight credit hours of
required courses and 16 credit hours of History electives at the 400 level or
above. Only one application is necessary to be admitted to both programs.
Please be aware that the Master of Arts in History is offered only in conjunction
with this dual degree program.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose first language is not English. The exam will be waived if the applicant has earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. institution. Officially translated and evaluated transcripts are required if not originally written in English. Only transcripts translated and evaluated by authorized organizations are accepted. Simmons College prefers either World Education Services (www.wes.org) or the Center for Educational Documentation (www.cedevaluations.com) International students must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to meet all the travel, living, and educational expenses for graduate study in the United States. This information must be provided if you are admitted to a graduate program at Simmons College.
