Program Description:

The Administrator of Special Education program and Supervisor/Director program at Simmons College prepare educators for Massachusetts licensure as an administrator of special education or supervisor/director. The administrator of special education course sequence is designed to prepare graduate students who will provide leadership to educators and staff working with learners in inclusive classrooms. This program offers students the opportunity to reflect on their classrooms and methodologies within a unique cohort structure. Each cohort includes between 15 and 18 students who work with Simmons faculty to build the kind of fair and effective community that they wish to create in their own schools. This model provides a safe environment to discuss challenges, gain inspiration and support, and share special education best practice strategies. The cohort is also a valuable resource - it becomes a strong, collegial network that continues to offer personal and professional support beyond graduation.

Students may pursue a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) or an Educational Specialist degree (Ed.S.), an advanced degree that provides students who currently hold a master’s degree in an area of educational specialization. The program features an integrated, practical curriculum with an emphasis on providing the unique administrative expertise to educators and staff working with learners with special needs. Coursework develops instructional and administrative leadership skills, with seminars and critical projects that address topics such as budgeting, demographics, program review, staff development, laws and regulations, conflict management, and specific issues in special education. Each program of study is individually designed in consultation with the program coordinator and can be completed on a full-time or a part-time basis. Courses are offered on weeknights, weekends, and occasionally as one week sessions. Students also may pursue a non-licensure track.

International Student Requirements:

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose first language is not English. The exam will be waived if the applicant has earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. institution. Officially translated and evaluated transcripts are required if not originally written in English. Only transcripts translated and evaluated by authorized organizations are accepted. Simmons College prefers either World Education Services (www.wes.org) or the Center for Educational Documentation (www.cedevaluations.com) International students must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to meet all the travel, living, and educational expenses for graduate study in the United States. This information must be provided if you are admitted to a graduate program at Simmons College.
